Monasteries and mountains share a reputation for remoteness. When it comes to the mountains of the Balkans in the Ottoman period, flight is an additional trope; Christians fled to the mountains, the argument goes, and monasteries found protection in secluded locations. Yet our knowledge of actual monastic landscapes in the mountains is very thin. This lecture will sketch out one such landscape, namely the southern Pindus mountains in what is central Greece today, during the centuries of Ottoman rule. Through a focused investigation of monastic location in these mountains we can begin to evaluate the larger assumptions outlined above.
